Asian Predatory Hornet

Vespa velutina

Description:

V. velutina is a species of hornet which preys on bees. It is a little bit smaller than the European hornet. The queens may be 30 mm, the males to 24 mm, the workers are about 20 mm. It has characteristic yellow legs. It is native to China.

I suspect that we have a local subspecies of this hornet, as there are differences, but no doubt about velutina.

It is also nice to learn that we must beware of nest locations. I have not seen one yet though.
