Vaccinium stamineum
Its white, bell-shaped flowers consisting of 5 spreading petals emerge from April through June, and on rare occasions from October through November. The fruit is an edible pubescent berry. The berries are pale bluish to purple and usually sweet-spicy tasting, a little reminiscent of lady's perfume, although some bushes produce sour or even slightly bitter berries.
The plant is native to eastern North America from Ontario in the north, south to Florida and west to Texas. It is typically found in rocky or sandy soil in xeric woodlands.
Spotted along the trail at the Allatoona Pass Battlefield. Add'l web ref: http://www.floridata.com/ref/v/vacc_sta....
