Male bird is black with red and yellow "shoulders" as shown. These "epaulets" are shown in full when the bird displays for females.
This was one of several birds in cattail thickets at the narrow end of Quail Lake, an artificial reservoir in Colorado Springs. Surrounding habitat is mostly residential neighborhoods, some commercial real estate.
