Plains Harvest Mouse

Reithrodontomys montanus

Description:

Brown back and a white belly.

Habitat:

Mixed grass prairie.

Notes:

I tagged along on the day trip for the wildlife techniques class even though I've already taken it. We opened a few pit fall traps and got several of these guys in them. They got a little chilly over night, so when we got them out of the traps they didn't run off or anything. I had put this guy down, but he didn't run off so I picked him back up and moved him under the grass clump. He was gone when we checked back.

I have also come across these while checking pitfall traps. Once, one hopped right to me and let me pet it. They are cute. Nice spotting
