Plain Chachalaca

Ortalis vetula

Description:

This large bird is about 56 cm (22 in) in length and is mostly brown/gray with a darker tail. They have loud calls that mimic their name.

Habitat:

Scrub/thorn forests.

Notes:

One of my favorite south Texas birds to find and photograph. They have this interesting behavior of running through the tree limbs and do it with such agility and grace that I'm always marveling at them.
