Sumatran Orangutan (Male)

Pongo abelii

Description:

There are two sub-species of orangutans, the Sumatran and the Bornean. The difference between the sub-species is based on color and how their face is shaped. Sumatran orangutans are a more orang-red color and have a rounder face. The Bornean orangutans are a brownish color and have a squarer face. The name orangutan comes from the islands Borneo and Sumatra. The name translates to, " Man of the forest", for they look like men and they spend their time in the catnip of the forest. The natives believed that orangutans were a primitive human that did not talk (but understood what they were saying) out of fear that they would be forced to work if they did.

Habitat:

This large cheek ape is named Mango. His home is in Zoo Miami, Florida with his mate Bonnie.

Notes:

I know this is a male because only males have large rounded cheek pads. These cheek pads help the males during the mating season. Females and males have large territory's that over lap each other. Their cheeks are used to give there mating call louder. The cheeks are shaped similar to how a microphone is used.
