Tau Emerald Dragonflies (mating)

Hemicordulia tau

Description:

Hemicordulia tau, commonly known as the "tau emerald", is a species of dragonfly in the family Corduliidae. This is a medium-sized, black and yellow dragonfly with long legs, reaching a body length of about 50 mm. In both males and females the inboard edge of the hindwing is rounded. This pair was spotted mating on a ponytail palm (aka elephant's foot tree) Beaucarnea recurvata. They held this position for several hours. The male is holding onto the palm frond and female beneath.

Habitat:

There are freshwater ponds nearby - the perfect habitat for dragonflies. This spotting, however, was in a suburban backyard in Brisbane, Queensland.

Notes:

Thanks to member Lawrence5 for the correct species ID. My original ID was the Australian Emperor Dragonfly - Hemianax papuensis. Both species look very similar.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian...

Thanks, Lawrence5. I'll certainly look into that. Hemicordulia tau is also found in Brisbane, so you could very well be right.

I belief the dragonflies in mating are not an Australian emperor rather Hemicordulia tau Tau Emerald ( if I am correct !! )

No worries. A lot of people make that same mistake. It seems counter-intuitive.

Thanks, Keith. I had a 50/50 chance and blew it.

Beautiful. But it is the male that is grasping the leaf.
