Recurvirostra americana
To feed they swing their bills back and forth to catch invertebrates. They have the winter plumage with their heads being gray. During breeding season adult heads are a rusty color. The body is white and wings are black and white. They have dark, long, upturned bills and long light colored legs.
A pair stopped to feed in a shallow sand bar area of Lake Lewisville. I have not seen them since last fall.
This is my 3000 spotting. Thought it would be fun to join with the others who made this milestone today with birds. Congratulation again to you both :) Joan PN: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/229... Jemma PN: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/228...

It was such fun to have Joan and Jemma cheering me on. Project Noah has a great group of contributors :)
Spectacular 3,000th spotting, gatorfellows! What an incredible achievement, and to share it on the same day with Jemma and Joan is awesome! Congratulations, and thanks again for all the help and beautiful spottings!
I saw your avocet in non breeding plumage. Looks equally lovely.
I love seeing these birds too. They were here last fall on thier way to their wintering grounds. Not in their breeding plumage, but just a wonderful;
PN http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/151... I have a couple more days of spottings to put up, including a movie. Project Noah is such fun :)
These are amazing birds. they physically strike Northern Harriers or other predators to protect their nesting site. Day-old avocets can walk, swim, and even dive to escape predators
Thanks Joan. It was a good day spotting at the lake :)
Congratulations on your 3000th spotting. Beautiful shots.
Thnaks Tom15 :)
