Eastern Rosella

Description:

Adults grow to about 34cm. A multi-coloured bird (red head & upper chest, white cheek patch, scallopped black yellow back, light aqua rump, yellow chest, various shades of blue, green & hints of lilac). This pretty parrot is also called the White-cheeked Parrot due to the large white patch on either side of the face, a common feature of some of the other rosella species. Often seen around farmlands and gardens in small groups or alone or pairs. Feeds on seeds on the ground or in trees where it also feeds on nectar, occasional insects & fruit. The call is melodic with bell-like tinkling. During breeding season the birds can be seen in groups flying in spirals not far from the ground as they twist & turn around each other moving downwards calling constantly. This routine is repeated several times & is quite spectacular to watch as the multi-coloured birds fan their tails & sunlight catches the beauty of the outstretched wings & tails quivering in mid air.

Habitat:

Found in south east areas of Australia's eastern states & Tasmania. This one in dry woodland area of north east NSW.

Notes:

I watched this bird fly over & land nearby. Knowing how shy they are I thought I would only get a very distant photo before it took off. wondered why I could still keep walking towards it I realised when I looked closely it had actually gone to sleep! Must have had a big night! I didn't push my luck by moving closer & was content to watch it from this distance to take in the sighting opportunity. Although they are said to be quite common, it is not often I see them here in great numbers.
