spotted cranefly

Nephrotoma appendiculata

Description:

large fly often likened to a large mosquito. This one is brightly colored and almost looks like a wasp, except it only has one wing pair and the distinctive mouthparts of a cranefly

Habitat:

In the grass next to a porch

Notes:

This was after a spider vs crane fly match that went on for some 15 minutes. He got away, but I don't know if he actually won. He was constantly moving and flapping, thus the blurry pics
