Crustose Lichen

Description:

Lecanora hybocarpa, Buellia stillingiana, Pyrrhospora varians

Habitat:

bark. Coweeta in Nantahala NF

Notes:

Collected for Lichen Bioblitz. Sorry to put three species on one spotting. I'm not the one who ID'd these, and I can't tell them apart. Online descriptions are highly variable. If anyone can point out which is which, I'll separate into additional spottings.

Yes, the map look is a really cool one! We learned that each lichen gives off chemicals at the edge to protect itself from being taken over by the other lichens - a fungicide produced by a fungus - crazy!
