Spotted-eye Syrphid Fly

Description:

Eristalinus arvorum (Fabricius, 1787), of subgenus Lathyropthalmus, is distributed in China, Australia (Qld), Hawaiian Is, Micronesia, Northern Marianas, and Southeast Asia. In Pakistan, it is used as an insect pollinator in an apple orchard in sub-tropical continental highlands climatic type, situated in the outer Himalayas. In India, it has been identified as one of the insect pollinators in fruit setting of mango. although not as significant as Apis florea and Chrysomya megacephala. Eristalinus is a genus of hoverfly of family Syrphidae. Most species have very distinctive eye marking in the form of spots or banding, though these features may fade on some preserved specimens. Most are stout flies, and are nimble flyers.

Habitat:

Backyard garden, spotted nectaring on Madagascar Periwinkle flower.
