Notodontidae sp
Spiny caterpillar up to 4 cm long usually seen in clumps. Red head with white spines and black colouring. It has four sets of prolegs.
Kimberley Savannah woodland.
Wow Notodontidae certainly looks very much like it especially as the plant also appears to be Kimberley Heather or related to it. Thanks.
Here's another link so it seems Notodontidae is a good choice https://www.flickr.com/photos/nieminski/...
My best guess it might be related to these especially as they are clustering in such numbers... http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au...
Thanks, we only saw it on Kimberley Heather.
Oh.. then lepidopteran is likely not sawfly. Good info. Plant type might be a good clue.
New photograph added showing four sets of prolegs.
Thanks Mark i'll have a look back through some photographs for prolegs.
Maybe sawfly larvae like Pergidae? If we could count the prolegs...
