Bornean Orang-utan

Pongo pygmaeus morio

Description:

These orang-utans are part of a rehabilitation programme in Borneo, they have already been nursed through their early years and taught how to survive in the forests and now live freely within a protected forest. These are not captive, they are living freely, building nests at night and foraging within the forest and have the choice as to whether to come to the feeding platforms for food. Some of them just disappear off into the forest and are not seen again.

Habitat:

The Bornean orangutan lives in tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests in the Bornean lowlands, as well as mountainous areas up to 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) above sea level. This species lives throughout the canopy of primary and secondary forests, and moves large distances to find trees bearing fruit. These were spotted along a river and also deep within the jungle.

Notes:

These apes are under threat due to habitat destruction particular for palm plantations for the production of palm oil, this was very evident when driving around the country seeing the pockets of protected forest surrounded by palm oil plantations, ironically though these plantations actually provide an addition food source for so may of the forest inhabitants!
