Spotted Salamander

Ambystoma maculatum

Description:

Trapped in a deep vernal pool by my ecology class on our night walk. Because it was only about 2 inches long, too small for breeding, it must have been a larvae which over wintered in the vernal pool. Unusual for this species of ambystoma.

Habitat:

Deep vernal pool
