Ravenala madagascariensis

Description:

This stately "tree" is not a palm or a banana tree but a member of the bird-of-paradise plant family Strelitziaceae. Ravenala madagascariensis is the sole member of the genus Ravenala. It supposedly gets its common name because rainwater gets trapped by the stem sheaths. supplying drinking water to travelers in need.

Habitat:

Growing as an ornamental in MacRitchie Reservoir Park, Singapore.
