Eastern Leaf-footed Bug

Leptoglossus phyllopus

Description:

A brown Hemiptera (bug) with a light stripe midwing. The antennae are reddish at the ends. Nymphs and adults suck juices from a variety of plants. This bug is particularly noted as a pest on citrus, on which it causes premature fruit drop, but also known to damage many other crops and ornamental plants.

Habitat:

On a leaf at Bayou Segnette State Park. This park is not far from the urban center of New Orleans, yet it features access to two types of wetlands, swamp and marsh. Saltwater intrusion coming into the canals from the Gulf of Mexico created the marsh. This is a remarkable habitat for plant and wildlife.
