Red-eyed Stream Frog

Duellmanohyla uranochroa

Description:

Classified as Vulnerable by the ICUN. Found only in Costa Rica and Panama. Females to 4cm, bright green dorsal coloration, red eyes with horizontal pupils

Habitat:

moist forests, rainforests

Notes:

Populations in Costa Rica declined dramatically in the 1980's and early 90's. For more than 10 years no individuals were spotted at all. Then in 2007 this species was documented again and populations have been making a slow rebound. I spotted this individual at El Copal Biological Reserve. I actually spotted it sleeping during the day on a leaf beside the trail. I couldn't believe my luck! It was no where near water but evidence suggests that after breeding this species is able to move away from its stream side breeding habitat.
