Red Trumpet Vine

Campsis radicans

Description:

A spotting of red trumpet vine here in Kansas. Known as the cow itch vine and hummingbird vine as well. While this one was found on a riverbank in deciduous woodland, they are a popular ornamental plant for their flowers. As with the name this plant is very popular with hummingbirds and is a nesting plant for many other species. It's Latin name "radicans" means "with stems that take root" which describes this plant readily. Hungrily climbing fences, buildings, telephone poles, and trees. It is considered invasive in certain areas outside of its native range.

Habitat:

Native to the Eastern US all the way up into Ontario. Naturalized in the Western US and brought over into Europe. Scattered throughout Latin America as well.
