Phellinus gilvus
Decaying polypore growing out of a stump about 1.5 - 2 feet in diameter. Largest cluster was about 9 inches across. Last picture is of cluster that was growing on the roots several feet away.
Found just outside of Comstock Riverside Park, which is full of hardwoods, conifers, and beeches. The park floods from time to time and can often be very marshy.
Appears parasitic. I found this specimen in front of someone's house (not in their front lawn, but the lawn in front of the sidewalk in front of their house). While I was examining it, a woman who lived there was leaving and she told me that it had killed the tree the spring before. I also observed that both of the trees on either side of stump, despite being separated by driveways and well over a dozen feet, also appeared to be dying. They appear to be the same species of tree (will confirm when the leaves come in) and I highly suspect that they are infected with the same fungi.
