Moss Katydid

Xerophyllopteryx fumosa

Description:

large, extremely camouflaged katydid, antennae at least 6 in long. the last photo shows where I first saw this

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

One of the coolest spots I found in Dominica. It was quite a surprise to see this. I was hiking with a few people on the Boiling Lake trail when one guy stopped and turned around to show me this huge insect that landed on his crotch! It was really cooperative and didn't jump away. Everyone else kept on the trail and I stayed behind to get some photos of this. Same one that is my profile pic right now. Morne Trois Pitons national park.

Thanks bayucca for the comment and ID. Seems like I have great luck spotting moss katydids. Their camo can't hide them from me! Ha! Unfortunately bayucca, that is not me in the last photo. Thanks Bernadette and Sckel. Thank you very much Landmark and Daniel. Many more to come!
