Callipepla californica

Description:

California state bird and the most common quail in California. Males have a black face out lined with white border, grey body and chestnut brown crow. Patterned belly, wings and neck. Forward topknot Females are similar but lack the color and markings on the head.

Habitat:

chaparral, oak woodlands and sagebrush
