Crossbills color is overall (except wings)like a Purple Finch not just head, chest and rump. They are also big headed and stocky built not slender.

The bill is definitely crossed though.

Hi Jemma,

I totally see why you think it is a crossbill, but I really don't think this bird is. I am almost 100% positive it is a house finch. I think in the picture it might just be a piece of twig behind the bill, or it is possible that he was just holding his bill funny too. Every other feature points to a finch and not a crossbill.

Hi Jemma. This is a great capture. It doesn't look like a crossbill to me though. It looks more like a house finch. The red crossbill does not have streaking except as a juvenile. The Juvenile does not have red on it.
