Trichiurus lepturus
Also known as the largehead hairtail and beltfish. These fish do not have scales but shiny, metallic skin covering their long, tapered bodies.
Washed up on ocean shore
Although I don't eat fish, I was surprised as well, drP. Thanks for your nice comments, Phillip!
It's funny that such an important commercial food fish gets so little publicity in the US.
Interesting, KdonGalay. The habitat in your link doesn't include the Southeastern coast of the United States, but this set me in the direction of possibly having the correct ID. Thank you!
Thanks for your comments, drP and Sam10. The "sunglasses" effect is because something was pecking at its eyes. My brother speculated that perhaps something had eaten off a fin. It would be great if it were ID'd at some point.
This is definitely different. And not just because it looks like it's wearing sunglasses.
Thanks for your comments. My brother was along and he knows a fair amount about fish but he hadn't seen anything like this either.
Wow. Not a Barracuda. But it looks kind of deep sea like. I am a diver and have never seen it.
