Trillium recurvatum recurvatum
Three-leaved plant with a burgundy flower growing close to the ground in the shade.
Wetland woods near oak, maple, and ash trees.
Found on the North Des Plaines River Trail. Wikipedia gives the family as Melanthiaceae but Encyclopedia of Life gives it as Liliaceae and distinguishes it from Trillium recurvatum. Not sure why the nomenclature varies. It's apparently very common in Illinois, but closely monitored at the edge of its range in Wisconsin and Michigan. Pollinated by beetles and flies. The spots may help disguise the leaves and keep them from being eaten by deer.
