It is a freshwater crayfish. Its hard to say which species of crayfish it is, I'm no good with aquatic inverts. Thanks for the information.

Brett, have a look at the link below. I know very little about crays and almost nothing about the species in the US. This article talks about the Big Sandy Cray that is rapidly declining in Kentucky and almost disappeared in other regions. This might not be the same species but please have a read - might be significant.

Great spotting ! hope she got to the other side OK !! I noticed the damp patch on the road under the tail. Is this a fresh water crayfish ?
