Spotting

Description:

The insect of this spotting was long, narrow and slender. The wings, folded back were black with a white pattern. Legs are very long, very slender. It appears to have a stinger (?). Overall size would be roughly three inches.

Habitat:

Seen in my backyard at the edge of a wooded area. It was hanging on a small growth of plant at the edge of the lawn.

Notes:

This insect was just kind of draped over the small vining plant. I was able to get several shots before it ocurred to me that perhaps this insect was not alive; I gave it a teeny poke. It flew off and took with it my chance for further pictures. Not too bright on my part! It appeared to be dining on another smaller insect. I was not able to get any facial details but it sure looks as if the smaller insect was today's lunch.

I have been looking up wood wasps and sawflies. The markings are way different from the photos I saw of wood wasps, but the wings are folded like wood wasps, and the stinger is similar.

Can't imagine what it is. I thought it was maybe a type of lacewing, but nope, the shape is right but the wing is not. Hope somebody can help out.
