Greater Spotted Woodpecker

Dendrocopos major

Description:

This Greater Spotted Woodpecker has been flitting around the trees outside of our house for several weeks now. She appears to be female as she only has the red at the lower part of her body under her tail feathers and not at the base of her head as the male would have. She has quite a distinctive chirp and I often hear her before I see her. I have also heard tapping coming from the valley behind our house, so assume that the sound comes from a woodpecker also.
