Wasp-Mimicking Moth

Macrocneme chrysitis

Description:

A large black and metallic green moth of about 3 cm, imitating a wasp. Even the antennae have a white tip as in many wasps. The metallic green coloration is due to tiny scales on the wings and body, which are lost as the insect ages or is damaged. A band of white spots circles the lower thorax.

Habitat:

Came to the parking lights of a shopping mall, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

This is the Southern Cyan Tiger Moth and is a day-flying Ctenuchid (Arctiidae: Ctenuchinae). It ranges from southern Texas through tropical Central America.
