European peacock

inachis io

Description:

A very common butterfly in the UK, this one kindly landed right at the side of me on the path I was walking up and started to sun itself! It has large eyes to help ward off any predators if it has its wings fully open In addition to this, the butterfly is able to make a hissing sound by rubbing its wings together that is audible to human ears.

Habitat:

seen on a path at the side of ancient woodlands.
