Speckled wood

parage aegeria tircis

Description:

The appearance of these butterflies change from North to South(Britain). The ones in the North are dark brown with white spots whereas the ones in the south are brown with orange spots! As this is a northern specimen you can see the 'eye spots' are white on a dark brown background.

Habitat:

seen in local ancient woodlands.

Notes:

In England this butterfly is found south of a line between Westmorland in the west and South-east Yorkshire in the east. I am just on the cusp of South Yorkshire.
