Blue blubber jellyfish

Catostylus mosaicus

Description:

The blue blubber jelly ranges in color from white to light blue to dark purple. In Asia, this venomous jelly is considered a culinary delicacy. It can be safely eaten once it's been correctly dried and processed. The blue blubber’s bell can be up to 16 inches wide. It can be found in coastal waters of eastern and northern Australia. Jelly populations were kept in check by predators like sea turtles and jelly-eating fish. Due to the reduction of their predators, jelly populations are growing at alarming rates.

Habitat:

This blue blubber jellyfish resides at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland.
