Yellow Archduke

Lexias canescens pardalina

Description:

The Yellow Archduke is a Southeast Asian butterfly that is typically sighted on shaded trails and among undergrowth. It is seldom seen in open sunny areas. It is mainly a forest dweller and adults are often seen puddling on damp ground, feeding on rotting fruits and other organic matter amongst forest litter as seen in these shots

Habitat:

Bukit Timak Nature Reserve, with contains the last remnants of primary rainforest in Singapore.

Notes:

My first encouter with this butterfly was the last shot, taken with a telelens. I followed it from a distance in the rainforest and could finally get close when it landed on leaf litter on the path.

Thanks injica. That shadow shot was my first glimpse of this butterfly, and I got intrigued. The caterpillar is quite extraordinary!

:-)
Those ventral 3 spots/markings that showed on the edge of the shadow shot were pretty diagnostic I reckon... but I agree it was virtually impossible :-)
