Etlingera littoralis

Description:

Strange shiny red flower, sitting directly on the forest floor; no stem, no leaves. About 10 cm tall.

Habitat:

Forest floor. I spotted it in a natural reserve in the North of the country, in the vicinity of the Khunkorn waterfall.

Both species are part of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) but not of the same genus. The ginger we use for cooking is the rhizome of Zingiber officinale.

Stunning! Is it related to the ginger used to cook?
