Pawpaw (Papaya)

Carica papaya

Description:

The papaya, papaw, or pawpaw (as it is known in Australia) is the fruit of the plant Carica papaya, the sole species in the genus Carica of the plant family Caricaceae. Carica papaya plants and their fruits are known by different names around the English-speaking world. Papayas can be used as a food, a cooking aid and in traditional medicine. The stem and bark may be used in rope production.

Habitat:

These fruit trees love the frost-free heat of the tropics and subtropics. Queensland is the ideal location with its hot, humid summers and frost-free winters (in coastal areas of the southern region).

Notes:

My Pawpaw is male, and is the only one of my three plants that survived the Brisbane flood of 2011. The males typically grow clusters of flowers on long stalks. The females usually produce shorter stalks with individual flowers.
