Some type of fern. About 6" tall Upstate NY, in coniferous and deciduous mixed forest
It's an ebony spleenwort. When the fern gets a little older, the pinnae with become more elongated and have a toothier margin, typical of the species. The dark color of the stem that gives the fern its common name is already developing in your spotting.
