Festive Tiger Beetle

Cicindela scutellaris

Description:

A shimmering green-blue beetle that would have fit inside the circumference of a penny. The color on the lower abdomen was a burnt orange or shiny brown. Two very large eyes and antennae about the length of its legs. Wings beneath the shell.

Habitat:

Sandy, dry soil. Small, shrub-like vegetation.

Notes:

When we approached this beetle, it sprang up and flew just a few feet before landing; much like a grasshopper. It repeated this process several times.
