Description:

some sort of Russula species with purple brown cap about 2 inches diameter, depressed at the center, white broadly spaced gills, brittle flesh, stem white 3/8 to 1/2 in thick.

Habitat:

alone on the ground in mixed woods (note the pine needles in the photo).

looks like Russula variata - multicolored cap....gills should be regularly forked about halfway between cap edge and stipe
