Platycerium sp. Fern (epiphyte)

Platycerium sp.

Description:

Giant Staghorn cluster (Platycerium species), but there are four species of Giant Staghorn (P. grande, P. holttumii, P. superbum, and P. wandae). Exactly which species, I'm not sure. It could even be an Elkhorn cluster. Found in subtropical rainforest on Tamborine Mountain, SE Queensland. Australian native? This specimen was extremely large.

Habitat:

Subtropical rainforest, excellent rainfall, and a moderate subtropical climate. Coastal area hinterland at altitude approx. 1500mtrs. This photo was taken at the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk.

Notes:

Staghorn or elkhorn? The difference between these two plants is the elkhorn (Platycerium bifurcatum) has thinner, whispier leaves and multiple “eyes” or rosettes of foliage, whereas the staghorn (Platycerium superbum – pronounced superb-um) has a single eye and larger leaves. These two species are now very popular as cultivated plants. There are a number of species in this genus, as shown in the link.
