Large moth with red velvety legs, off-white markings down each side of it's short, thick body. The wings are 1/2 the same velvet red color with off white "check" marks and the other half of the wing is shaded red to grey. The lower edges are grey with red spots, the upper edges had wavy lines and an "eye".

Verified as a Tulip Tree Silk Moth by Entomologist Karen Hopkins of Coby College (who also took possession of the specimen along with eggs she had laid). I had put the Moth in an appropiate container and brought her inside to save her from the low temperatures that same night, the next morning I discovered eggs had been safely laid. Maybe the first recorded sighting of species in Maine.
I've been looking through some old images. This moth's markings seem to match more closely one of the Cecropia's cousins, the Promethea Moth. They can often be confused since they are quite similar in appearance.
