Small Tortoiseshell

Aglais urticae

Description:

Sleeping beauty... Temperatures were icy on this late May morning and this poor Aglais urticae appeared almost frozen on his sleeping spot. I was even able to brush the few grass blades on the 5th pic aside to get very close to it.

Habitat:

Alpine meadow.

Notes:

Butterflies are cold-blooded. When they get too cold, they warm themselves in the sun. Dark-colored scales soak up heat very well. One hour later the butterfly had flown away.

Thanks Dan. All my other spottings of this species are only dorsal shots I think. For a change I was happy to be able to capture the intricacy of the ventral side :-)

Nice that it staying still for you. Too bad you couldn't get any dorsal shots. These butterflies are really beautiful.
