Common Claybank Tiger Beetle

Cicindela limbalis

Description:

Purplish brown marked with ivory and metallic green as shown. Size about 12-16 mm.

Habitat:

On trail through mixed conifer woodland with riparian corridor of willow, aspen at an elevation of over 9,000 ft.

Notes:

This species flies high and far when startled, such that it is impossible to follow once it takes off. That is in contrast to most tiger beetles that fly low and for a short distance before alighting again.
