New Guinea Flightless Rail

Megacrex inepta

Description:

Very large brown rail (36-38cm) with a large head and long powerful grey legs and feet. Bill is greenish yellow and the face is grey. Underparts paling to near white.

Habitat:

Two sub species known, this being M.i.inepta from the southern lowlands of PNG. This one found in lowland swamp forest on the Ketu River, a tributary of the Fly River. Attracted to sago palm harvesting where they pick through the palm pith looking for insects.

Notes:

Listed as 'Near Threatened' on the Red List. This bird was very shy but worth the wait and countless leeches to get a glimpse of this elusive species.

Thank you Polilla. Not a flashy bird but due to its rarity and because it is seldom seen, I thought it needed documentation.
