Mourning Cloak

Nymphalis antiopa

Description:

Wingspan 2-1/2 - 3 inches. Wings are mostly dark brownish with maroon above, with pale yellowish outer margins and bright blue spots. Below, wings are dull blackish brown with fine lines and pale outer edges.

Habitat:

Prefer sunny, open habitats. Can be found in gardens and along streams or rivers. Active spring and early summer through fall.

Notes:

Found this lovely Mourning Cloak when I was out seeding new native wildflowers behind my yard.
