Pagoda Fungus

Podoserpula pusio

Description:

These were fruiting bodies stacked-up like frilly pancakes around a slender central column. they were about 30 mm high. The upper surfaces were a golden yellow and the undersides were soft, white and fluffy. The central stipe was white with a brownish yellow stain. At teh base were dense masses of hyphae. There were a couple of such stacks in the same area.

Habitat:

Spotted at the base of a large dead eucalyptus tree.

Notes:

These little fluffy stacks of fungus were very delicate and partially dug-up by Lyrebirds in this forest. I was excited to spot these still intact !. This fungus is stated to be uncommon. It has a pagoda-like appearance in profile and hence the name.

Mushroom growing from mushroom growing from mushroom. It makes one wonder why and how evolution would produce this.
