Eulophophyllum sp.
A katydid nymph with the back legs of a leaf footed bug!
tropical rainforest
I spotted this amazing insect during a night hike in Tawau hills park. I found it on top of a waist high shrub right on the edge of the forest where the trail exited onto the manicured grass of the lodge ground. I could only get shots of it from this angle because I was afraid it would jump away if I tried to get through the tangle of brush around it.
Thanks for the ID bayucca. I should have known that the ID wizard would know what this is ;). Thanks everyone for all the kind comments. I'm glad everyone thought this was as amazing as I did. Wow, this is so cool that this and my previous spotting (pagoda fungus) are both new or undescribed species.
One heck of a critter! Never seen a thing like this in all of my encyclopedias as a kid. The closest to this is the stick or leaf insect.
Wow Dan, that is just mind-blowing! I was guessing katydid too, but what an incredible one it is! And a really odd position too. The photo in bayucca's reference looks more normal but still beyond belief.
Oh My! Really this site is teaching me so much. THANKs to all contributors and to you, for this incredible find.
Chun, I also think this is a katydid nymph, but the pose is quite typical, they have to put somewhere their long legs, so this pose seems to be quite comfortable ;-)...
Great ID work Dominik.
Would you be able to identify this too as I believe they are related with their same pose http://images.plurk.com/7eb4bpzI9Jimyy0G...
Tettigoniidae, Phaneropterinae, Eulophophyllum sp. most probably and maybe an undescribed one.
