I think this might be a velvet mite because its so big. I just dug through the internet trying to identify the same thing. There seems to be a lot of contradicting info confusing both of them. From what I understand after my googling rampage, the chiggers are insects with 6 legs while the velvet mites are arachnids with 8 legs and are a lot bigger than chiggers. http://www.greenleafpest.com/blog/bid/19...
Im no bug pro but it was a fun learning experience.
