Great blue heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

Young shore bird predominantly blue-grey color with white area. Standing approximately 42 to 50 inches in height.

Habitat:

In a drainage ditch next to a retail and residential area.

Notes:

While watching this heron I noticed that while walking a fish was spotted and caught from the lawn area next to the ditch. The heron had "eyes bigger than his belly," worthy of a pelican. After catching the catfish he tried to swallow it. While doing so you can see by his eyes that the barbs on the catfish's body were a problem. Heron drops the catfish and leaves the area. So does the catfish.
