Hazelnut

Corylus cornuta var. cornuta

Description:

Shrubby tree, about 6" tall. Pictures are of husk-covered nut and of female flower. Husk is covered in sharp, irritating hairs.

Habitat:

Growing in mixed deciduous/conifer woods in NH.

Notes:

Little hazelnuts are edible if you can get any - the squirrels and chipmunks, etc., eat them before they're ripe!
