9" long. Like the more common Downy Woodpecker, head boldly pied; black and white; wings black, white spotted; underparts white; male has red nape patch. The Hairy is larger, with much longer bill and clear, white unspotted outer tail feathers. Voice-Loud rattle; sharp "Peek", long drum.
Woods, suburbs Range- Resident in New England
I was lucky to spot both the male and female in fairly close proximity to one another. As we got closer, the female went to a hole in a nearby tree which I would assume is her nest.
